Oscar Grant Update: Mehserle receives a change of venue...

This is just a brief update on what is going on regarding the murder of Oscar Grant, which occurred on January 1, 2009. In case you didn't know, this young man was shot in the back, while handcuffed and lying on his stomach, by a BART police officer in Oakland, CA. The officer, Johannes Mehserle, has been charged for the crime and has plead not guilty. According to The Associated Press, Mehserle was granted a change of venue; now the trial will not take place in Oakland. Mehserle's attorney claimed that his client could not receive a fair trial in Oakland due to all the news coverage. I think that no matter where the trial is moved, he will still be found guilty because there was no reason to shoot Grant. At least I hope he is found guilty...we all know how this kind of case usually turns out...*side-eye*...

  2. Hi Don,

You would think that riots would have occurred but nope...there were protests and such, but no rioting. Not sure if rioting would have been a good thing or not. I've always wondered at the impulse to tear up ones community because an injustice occurred. I suppose if the rioting was directed at the right area or people, perhaps it would make an impact?

  3. You make a good point, but I think irrational acts called for irrational acts, especially during the times where a life has been taken. I agree @ always wondered at the impulse to tear up one's community ... but, as you went on to state, once directed @ the true entity, yes, it won't bring that young man's life back but it will signal retribution.

  4. Hmmm...I think that irrational acts cause irrational acts...instead of getting caught up in the extreme emotion that comes with the murder of an unarmed and non-threatening person, people have to think rationally and direct that emotion in such a way that would bring about change. I'm no history buff, but look at the LA riots in '92...with all that destruction, is LA any better off? I doubt it...

  5. As a former San Francisco county resident, I cried when I witnessed this via Youtube. My heart said tht just could not happen, but there it was in digital color and I cried some more. Mesherle has tried to run was returned and now has moved his venue. Wow. He hired a good lawyer. His day of reckoning will come in this life time or the next. His soul will beg for forgiveness.

  6. Hi mama,

We live in such a technologically rich society; We are now able to see the atrocities committed by so many people...those who are "everyday, run of the mill" and those who are supposed to protect others. Seeing the footage of Oscar Grant being shot, in the back while lying on the ground and handcuffed, hurt my soul. It is outrageous that this cop is able to run to Nevada, be brought back to Cali, and still be allowed to have a change of venue!

You are so right though...he will definitely get his...Karma comes back on everyone, no matter who you are. I do hope, however, his Karma comes back on him real soon...

    Thanks for posting!
